Learning to be a nurse is a highly valuable and rewarding career, with a good standing in society. There are a number of key skills which are required of anyone within the nursing and greater care professions.
- You need to be able to listen and communicate effectively with a wide range of people. you will be in direct contact with other nursing and healthcare staff, doctors, surgeons and specialists as well as patients and their families. You will often be the middle man between the patient and the doctors and other advanced staff!
- You need to be able to make decisions quickly and effectively. Sometimes, a nurse needs to make a split second decision about the care and treatment of a patient, especially in circumstances when life or death is at stake! You need to be able to work calmly and efficiently in a crisis.
- Be flexible with time – nurses often have to work a range of different shifts to cover all hours at a hospital. It is not uncommon for nurses to do several nightshifts in a row and then switch back to daytime hours the next day!
